The Electronic Exchange of Social Security Information (EESSI) is an IT system provided by the European Commission to help social security institutions across the EU exchange information more rapidly and securely, replacing paper-based exchanges with a European-wide electronic system using structured electronic documents (SEDs).
The European Commission also provided a Reference Implementation for a National Application (RINA), consisting of a collection of infrastructure and user interface, repository, communication, integration and publishing services, as a temporary solution to the countries that had not yet developed their own National Applications to start their implementation of EESSI.
Effective January 2022 the European Commission will hand over the RINA development, maintenance, training and support services to the participating institutions, which can continue to use RINA and secure support services or can develop their own National Applications adapted to the needs of national institutions in their own area.
